On Tuesday night, border guards from the VSAT Pagėgių detachment conducted a stop in the Joniškio district, near the village of Kalviai. The checkpoint targeted a passenger bus traveling on the route from Vaasa, Finland, destined for Warsaw with a stop in Riga. The vehicle, which bore Estonian license plates, was undergoing routine inspection.
During the process, border officials paid attention to two young individuals who possessed Austrian identification cards. Upon inspection, the guards noted a discrepancy between the photographs affixed to the documents and the actual appearance of the passengers. Furthermore, the individuals were found to lack the requisite supporting documentation necessary for entry or legal stay within Lithuania.
Further investigation revealed that the group was not comprised of the initially identified persons. The passengers were, in fact, 22 Somali nationals who had been issued asylum seeker cards in Latvia during May. The incident highlighted significant procedural gaps regarding documentation.
Authorities emphasized that for these individuals to legally enter and remain in Lithuania, appropriate and verifiable documentation would have been mandatory. The stop underscored the ongoing need for thorough vetting processes at border crossings for all arriving parties.
