MiG-29 fighters are currently stationed at the 22nd Tactical Aviation Base in Malbork, having been part of the Polish Air Force since 1989. Although these aircraft are scheduled for replacement with more modern models, they remain active in current missions. Poland had previously proposed transferring these fighters to Ukraine in exchange for Ukrainian drone technology.
However, this exchange agreement has not been finalized. Defense Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Władysław Kosiniackis-Kamysh stated that Poland had presented a clear proposal to Ukraine regarding drones and technology, noting that while an initial agreement was reached, Ukraine has not upheld its commitment. He added that Poland remains prepared for further negotiations.
This situation highlights growing tension between Kyiv and Warsaw. The former Prime Minister of Ukraine has characterized the current diplomatic standoff as an insult to Poland. The discussion centers on military aid, specifically the transfer of Polish aircraft in return for advanced Ukrainian technological assets.
