URM: Lithuania has expressed protest to Russia over the destruction of Ukraine’s cultural heritage

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement detailing the significant impact of recent actions by Russia on cultural sites within Ukraine. The statement highlighted the severe damage sustained by the Kyiv Pechersky Lavra, a site of considerable religious importance to Ukraine and the broader Christian world, and recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Notably, the Cathedral of the Holy Mother of God within the complex suffered extensive damage.

Beyond this, the Ministry reported multiple attacks during the current week. These incidents included strikes by Russian unmanned aerial vehicles and missiles against the National O. Dovgenko Film Studio and two educational facilities—a college and a school located in Dnipro.

Furthermore, on June 14, a Russian drone struck the Kharkiv Art Museum. The Republic of Lithuania utilized this platform to emphasize that these actions by the Russian Federation constitute clear violations of the 1954 Hague Convention on the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict. The reported damage underscores the targeting of key cultural assets across Ukraine by Russia, drawing international attention to the violations of international cultural law.
