VRK: citizens’ initiative to amend the Labour Code begins

The initiators of amendments to the Labour Code have announced plans to introduce more robust measures designed to protect employees’ rights and prevent employers from engaging in unlawful dismissals. According to the initiators, the current legal framework sometimes results in financial penalties for employers following unlawful dismissals that are lower than the costs associated with legally terminating employment. This citizen’s initiative, as stated in a press release from the VRK, aims to reform these protections.

Interested citizens can sign the initiative electronically on the official VRK website starting August 20. All collected signature sheets must be returned to the VRK no later than 5 p.m. on October 20, 2026.

Separately, procedural updates regarding local elections were also reported. Twelve candidates submitted reference materials to the VRK concerning participation in the early elections within the northern Nalšia region’s constituency. These submissions cover the necessary documentation for the relevant referenda.
