On Saturday night, personnel from the VSAT border guard stationed at the Varėna Border Guard Post detected a sound emanating from the state border into Lithuanian territory, which was characteristic of an unmanned aircraft. A fellow border guard immediately secured the area suspected of the violation. The initial alert, however, was attributed to noise generated by the border guard’s own equipment.
Following an inspection of the scene, authorities discovered a fixed-wing aircraft situated in the grass, located several hundred meters from the official border line. The recovered aircraft measured 175 cm in fuselage length and 230 cm in wing span. Attached to the plane was a bag sealed in transparent polyethylene film.
Inside this container, officials recovered 200 packs of “NZ Gold” cigarettes. The operation highlights the routine vigilance maintained by the border guard services. The discovery of the aircraft and the contraband underscores the ongoing monitoring efforts conducted by the VSAT unit.
The incident required the immediate deployment of personnel to secure the perimeter and investigate the source of the unusual sound detected near the border. The recovery of the goods suggests an attempted illicit crossing or unauthorized activity near the state border.
