The VMVT has issued a report concerning unsafe food and feed, specifically identifying that a peppermint tea product, branded “Clever” and packaged in 20 x 1.5 g units, sold by the “Iki” retail chain, was found to contain Salmonella spp. When approached by the Lrytas news portal, Gintarė Kitova, the communication manager for the “Iki” chain, stated that the company places high importance on quality and conducts regular self-inspections for its private label brands. Kitova explained that the microbiological contamination was detected in a newly received batch.
Consequently, the “Iki” chain immediately notified the VMVT and removed the affected product from store shelves. Addressing broader market pressures, Kitova noted that farmers are facing scrutiny regarding rising food costs and the ongoing fertilizer crisis. In response to the contamination, the specific product code was immediately deactivated in the store’s cash registers.
This measure ensures that customers cannot purchase the item until the product withdrawal process is fully completed. According to the chain’s representative, there are currently no units of the affected product available on the shelves.
