Public health authorities advise heightened vigilance regarding tick-borne illnesses, citing significant rates in Lithuania. According to data from the National Public Health Center, there were over 15,000 recorded cases of Lyme disease and more than 600 cases of tick-borne encephalitis in 2025. If an individual sustains a tick bite, prompt and correct removal is crucial.
Experts recommend using fine-tipped tweezers or a specialized tick remover. The procedure involves grasping the tick as close to the skin surface as possible and pulling upward slowly, taking care not to squeeze the tick’s body, which could increase the risk of infection. It is important to note that applying substances such as oil, alcohol, or cream to the bite area is not recommended.
Following any tick bite, continuous monitoring of the individual’s health for approximately one month is necessary. Individuals should pay close attention to potential symptoms, including the appearance of spreading redness, fever, headache, joint or muscle pain, or unexplained severe weakness. A professor associated with the University of Vilnius and “Vilnelės clinics” emphasized that vigilance remains paramount.
The incidence rates suggest that public awareness regarding proper tick bite management and recognizing early symptoms is essential for managing these potentially serious diseases.
