In the face of a serious crisis – news from the new environment: the hope for a solution is put in the municipalities

I. Andriulaitytė addressed journalists on Wednesday, expressing her hope that the municipality will resolve the current waste management problem, emphasizing that such management falls under the municipality’s responsibility. She noted that if the municipality cannot resolve the issue, alternative measures will be investigated.

Regarding potential solutions, she stated that options such as declaring a state-level emergency or utilizing waste incineration are being considered, though no definitive answer is available at this time. The Minister of the Environment voiced concern over the ongoing dispute between the Vilnius County Waste Management Center (VAATC) and the company “Energesman.” This conflict has raised alarms regarding the stability of waste disposal. Furthermore, scientific research indicates that the dispute poses a significant risk of a waste crisis, which could have detrimental ecological consequences.

Scientists specifically warned that such a crisis could lead to a measurable decrease in fish populations along the Baltic Sea coast. The collective focus remains on finding a sustainable solution to the waste management problem. The current situation highlights the critical need for a resolution to prevent environmental damage.

While various pathways, including emergency declarations or alternative processing methods, are being evaluated, authorities are currently in a period of assessment to determine the most appropriate course of action.
