Calls for measures: more attempts to take over accounts of users of messaging apps

The National Cyber Security Center (NKSC), in collaboration with the Second Operational Services Department (AOTD) and the State Security Department (VSD), has issued formal recommendations regarding heightened security measures for popular messaging services, including Signal and WhatsApp. The advisory warns the public about sophisticated malicious activities aimed at compromising user accounts. According to the report, cybercriminals are employing increasingly convincing social engineering tactics.

These attacks are sophisticated because they leverage a combination of artificial intelligence, publicly available personal information, and exploitation of human trust. Consequently, the threat is not directed at the messaging application itself, but rather at the individual users. Antanas Aleknavičius, Director of the NKSC, emphasized that the primary defense mechanism must shift toward user awareness.

He noted that the current landscape involves numerous attempts to trick users into granting access, aiming to take over private accounts. He stressed that the effectiveness of these scams relies on creating artificial urgency. To mitigate risk, the report advises that cybersecurity vigilance must begin with the ability to critically evaluate every message received.

Users should be cautious not to make significant decisions or take actions based solely on communications that generate a sense of immediate panic or urgency. The guidance underscores that skepticism and verification remain the most robust safeguards against digital fraud.
