VSAT officers operating at the state border with Belarus have successfully intercepted numerous illegal smuggling attempts using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). This year alone, personnel stationed at the border have seized an impressive total of 42 drones. On Thursday afternoon, the vigilance of the border guards was tested near Kuodžiai village in the Lazdijų district.
Officers from the Varėna border guard detachment, specifically stationed at the Kapčiamiestis border post, detected unusual sounds emanating from the Belarusian side, consistent with drone flight. In response, the border guards immediately deployed two specialized antidrone tools and secured the area to prevent any potential violations. The subsequent investigation revealed that smugglers had attempted to transport illegal contraband via a homemade flying machine.
Upon inspection, the guards located a blue-colored drone that had fallen into the forest, along with a piece of transparent polyethylene film nearby. The operation highlighted the ongoing threat posed by the use of drones for illicit cross-border activities. The successful interception of these devices, which were reportedly carrying 4,000 packs of Belarusian cigarettes, underscores the effectiveness of the border security measures.
The continuous monitoring and proactive deployment of specialized equipment by the guards remain critical in safeguarding the integrity of the national border against smuggling operations utilizing aerial technology.
