VRM claims to have not detected data leaks from state systems

Interior Minister Vladislavas Kondratovičius issued a statement clarifying the difference between the compromise of an individual e-mail account and a significant breach of state registries or critical information systems. The Minister confirmed that the personal data stored within the VRM’s email accounts remains secure, and the operational integrity of these internal systems has not been compromised. Kondratovičius emphasized that unauthorized attempts to gain access to email accounts represent one of the most prevalent cyber threats globally.

This warning is supported by recent national data. According to the National Cybersecurity Center, Lithuania detected an extensive volume of security incidents in 2025, specifically logging over 106,000 instances of leaked login data. These incidents necessitated alerting 221 different organizations regarding the compromised credentials.

The ministry’s statement underscores the importance of differentiating between localized account compromises and systemic failures within national data infrastructure. While the VRM has confirmed the security of its core systems and the confidentiality of its stored data, the statistics highlight the persistent and widespread nature of cyber threats targeting digital communications. This underscores the necessity for continuous vigilance regarding the security protocols protecting both personal mail accounts and larger governmental information systems.

  1. The distinction between an individual account compromise and a state system breach needs clearer definitions for the public.
