UN Secretary-General António Guterres recently visited Syria, engaging with key figures in the nation’s transitional government. During his visit, Guterres met with interim president Ahmed al Sharaa, who assumed leadership following the removal of Bashar al Assad in December 2024. The Secretary-General also held meetings with Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani and the president of the newly convened interim parliament.
Furthermore, Guterres toured the historic Old City and the prominent Omayyad Mosque. The diplomatic engagement took place against the backdrop of Syria’s significant economic recovery efforts, following a protracted 13-year civil war. In an effort to facilitate reconstruction, several Western nations, including the United States, have begun the process of dismantling previous economic sanctions imposed on the country.
Economically, the scale of the required rebuilding is substantial. The World Bank estimates that the total cost of reconstruction for Syria could reach $216 billion, equivalent to approximately €189 billion. Despite these international efforts to normalize trade, foreign investment remains cautious.
Experts note that while international support is critical, sustainable recovery in Syria will necessitate substantial investment directed toward the nation’s internal economy.
