A Kaunas resident was outraged by seeing cars with Russian license plates: “How can this be?” (1)

A local resident in Kaunas expressed concern regarding the appearance of certain vehicles on Lithuanian roadways, describing the sight of specific cars as unusual and disruptive to the daily atmosphere. The vehicles in question were noted to be registered in the Kaliningrad region, identified by region code 39. The resident also raised questions regarding optimal travel logistics, suggesting that the most direct route from Kaliningrad to Belarus might pass through Alytus rather than Kaunas.

Officials clarified that the presence of cars bearing Russian registration plates on Lithuanian roads does not automatically constitute a violation. Giedrius Mišutis, a representative from the State Border Guard Service (VSAT), explained the specific conditions under which such vehicles are permitted entry. According to Mišutis, entry into Lithuania is only authorized if the drivers possess a simplified transit document and are traveling specifically to or from the Kaliningrad region.

He further specified that any transit passage through Lithuanian territory is limited to a defined time period.
