A significant historical treasure was recently discovered within the cellar of the church in the town of Ukmergė, having been hidden there for over eight decades following World War II. The collection of documents is extensive and has been categorized into three distinct groups, offering deep insight into the region’s past. The first category comprises church records, the oldest of which date back to the mid-18th century and pertain to the era of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.
The second group consists of administrative files pertaining to the Šušvė village during the interwar period. These documents provide comprehensive documentation of village life, ranging from detailed financial reports to official correspondence exchanged between local and regional governing bodies. However, the most valuable segment of the find is the collection of personal documents.
These records span a considerable period, covering the years from the mid-18th century up to 1944. The materials include detailed records pertaining to the local nobility. The sheer depth of the archives suggests an unparalleled historical resource.
The discovery was made in a location previously used for storage within the church premises. Vaiva Budraitytė, author of the book “The Power of Astrology,” was reportedly suspended in the church cellar during the period of the find. This accumulated trove of materials promises to yield substantial knowledge for historians studying the social, administrative, and personal histories of the region.
