The Hungarian Prime Minister proposes to allow working in parliament for no more than 12 years

P. Magyar announced a proposed measure on the social network Facebook, detailing changes intended for the Parliament. Previously, in mid-June, the centrist party “Tisza,” led by P.

Magyar, secured a two-thirds majority in the Parliament to pass a constitutional amendment. This amendment stipulates that the prime minister can serve two four-year terms. The legislation would effectively prevent the return of former right-wing Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who was defeated in the recent April elections.

Viktor Orbán previously served as the Hungarian government leader during two distinct periods: from 1998 to 2002 and again from 2010 until his electoral loss. Under the parameters of the new rules, P. Magyar himself would also be limited to a single re-election.

With these changes, the country has elected a new prime minister, marking a transition from the pro-European era associated with V. Orbán to one led by P. Magyar.

The constitutional adjustments aim to redefine the tenure and limitations of the prime minister’s role within the Hungarian political structure.
