Officials from the Kaunas Nature Protection Department conducted an inspection of the Šešupė River, extending up to the hydroelectric dam. During the initial survey, no signs of pollution were detected; the water appeared normal, exhibited no unusual odors, and showed no evidence of oil products, foam, or other potential contaminants. Furthermore, UAB “Sūduvos vandenys” reported that there were no technological malfunctions or emergency situations noted at the facility.
Subsequently, officials addressed additional reports received from local residents. However, despite the increased suspicions raised by the community, no new environmental conditions indicating pollution were established. The inspection did reveal specific observations regarding aquatic life.
The highest concentration of deceased and fallen fish was noted in the Puskeliai tvenkinys area. After this primary assessment, personnel also documented the presence of juvenile fish downstream from the hydroelectric dam. Overall, the department confirmed that while pollution signs were nenustatyta during the official inspection, localized concentrations of dead fish required further attention.
The findings suggest that while the immediate signs of contamination were absent, the presence of deceased fish in specific areas warrants continued monitoring by environmental authorities.
