Between 2020 and 2022, paleontologists unearthed significant fossil remains in the Abu-Tarturo plateau, located within Egypt’s Western Desert. The discovery included seven distinct species of fossil sharks, accompanied by petrified teeth dating back millions of years. Researchers documented these findings in a study published in the journal Cretaceous Research. According to the lead author, Tarek Yassine, a paleontologist from Cairo University, the evidence suggests that the area now comprising the plateau was once submerged under a thriving sea. Yassine noted that the environmental conditions at that time were highly favorable for marine development and flourishing, citing optimal levels of temperature, sunlight, and oxygen.
The context of the discovery places it within the Cretaceous period, which spanned from 145 to 66 million years ago. Historical data, such as that maintained by the Natural History Museum in London, indicates that Earth’s climate during this era was considerably warmer than present-day conditions. The presence of these ancient sharks and their preserved teeth challenges perceptions of the modern arid landscape.
