Microchips offer a broad spectrum of benefits for companion animals that extend well beyond simple reunification efforts. They represent a highly effective measure for reducing the stray animal population and promoting responsible pet ownership. Furthermore, these chips assist in preventing neglect and instances of mistreatment of animals.
The official animal identification and registration process, managed through the Register of Pet Ownership, provides documented proof of ownership, which is crucial in situations where an animal’s custody may be disputed. To date, Lithuanian municipalities have successfully microchipped nearly 300 dogs and cats during the first half of 2026 alone. The initiative is gaining momentum, with an increasing number of municipalities participating.
This expansion offers local residents the opportunity to have their pets microchipped either free of charge or at a minimal cost. This effort is supported by the State Food and Veterinary Service (VMVT) through its Free Pet Identification Program. The program’s primary goal is to equip pet owners with reliable methods to identify and secure their animals.
By facilitating proper registration and identification, the program aims to strengthen the bond between responsible ownership and the welfare of companion animals across the country.
