Animal rescuers published shocking images from Šilalė district: “It was a real hell”

An advocacy group, GGI, expressed grave concerns regarding the welfare of animals, suggesting that systemic failures within institutions contributed to inhumane conditions. Following a report concerning animals potentially housed in unfavorable circumstances, the shelter “Plungės priglaustukai” dispatched a team that documented what they described as a deeply troubling scene. According to the organization’s records, an area intended for human use—specifically a kitchen—had been converted into a confined space for dogs.

The animals were reportedly kept in cages situated directly on their own waste, with the combination of poor hygiene and strong odors making the environment difficult to endure. The situation was not limited to this facility; GGI also reported on a separate incident involving kittens at the Regitros center, where efforts were made to rescue the young, though not all were saved. GGI noted that their initial investigation followed the removal of three dogs from the premises, after which a representative conducted a further assessment.

The organization also referenced the mayor’s awareness of the situation. The severity of the neglect described by the shelter team regarding the animals was deemed shocking. The group’s commentary indicated that when oversight fails, the resulting conditions for the animals can be described as akin to hell.
