Aviliai on the roofs of “Iki” stores: experts explained why the city is also suitable for beekeeping

The initiative to place bees on the roofs of the “Iki” retail network was a deliberate undertaking designed to achieve multiple environmental and educational goals. According to Vilius Jorudas, Head of Sustainability at “Iki,” the project aims to bolster local biological diversity while demonstrating that standard retail infrastructure can generate measurable environmental value. Furthermore, the effort seeks to deepen public understanding of urban beekeeping and clarify why pollinators, including bees, are critical to the overall health of the ecosystem.

Jorudas noted that this commitment to environmental integration aligns with the retail network’s broader focus this year on promoting Lithuanian goods and local production. In addition to the rooftop apiaries, the network has implemented several localized initiatives. For instance, during the spring season, “Iki” launched a new private brand called “Bitutė.” This brand offers consumers a curated selection of high-quality Lithuanian dairy products, fresh vegetables, groceries, and other essential daily goods.

By combining the visible presence of bee colonies on the roofs with a concentrated effort to showcase local sourcing, “Iki” is creating a holistic model. This approach not only supports local Lithuanian producers but also transforms the physical space of the stores into active ecological contributors. The integration of these elements underscores a commitment to sustainability that extends beyond mere commerce, engaging the community in understanding the vital role that urban biodiversity plays.
