The Department of Fire Protection and Rescue (DFPR) has advised residents to observe safety precautions while celebrating the shortest night of the year. Officials emphasized that festive enjoyment should not compromise adherence to established safety guidelines. Paulius Rinkevičius, head of the Education and Training Section at the PAGD Civil Defence Department, noted that while many associate the summer holidays with outdoor activities, nature, and time spent with family, vigilance remains crucial.
He stressed that many potential disasters can be prevented by following basic safety protocols. Key recommendations include ensuring responsible firewood burning practices, never leaving children unsupervised near water sources, and refraining from swimming when under the influence of alcohol. The DFPR cautioned that outdoor gatherings, such as bonfires and barbecues, must only take place in designated and safe areas.
The department highlighted the inherent risks associated with improper fire management. Examples of past incidents, including a gas cylinder explosion in the Vilnius district and a fire at a two-story residence in the Jonine district, underscore the danger posed by improperly lit fires. Residents are urged to treat all celebrations with caution to prevent avoidable incidents.
