Did a spot appear on your nail? The pharmacist explained when unpleasant injuries can hide behind the gel varnish

Manicures and pedicures utilizing gel varnish have seen a significant increase in popularity recently. According to a press release, gel varnish offers benefits such as longevity, potentially lasting up to a month, and rapid drying times. Furthermore, the product is reported to be less susceptible to external environmental factors, maintaining its color even during routine household activities.

However, a pharmacist cautioned that while the advantages of this type of varnish are evident, monitoring the natural condition of the nails over time is crucial. These potential changes are often not visible until the nail experiences trauma, such as cracking or detachment, or when the overlying varnish is removed. The pharmacist noted receiving frequent inquiries regarding alterations in the natural nail’s color or texture.

They specified that the appearance of spots—yellow, brown, or green—as well as layering or gel detachment from the nail plate, can be concerning. Critically, the expert advised that these changes in the nail structure are frequently only discernible upon the natural nail shedding, cracking, or during the process of varnish removal.
