Dramatic landing: a fire-engulfed F-16 fighter plane lands without a landing gear

The Greek Air Force confirmed that an emergency landing occurred at 1:45 p.m. local time today. During a press briefing, Lieutenant Colonel Konstantinos Gravalos informed journalists that the plane experienced an unspecified malfunction.

He also confirmed that the pilot was reported to be in good health. The aircraft in question belonged to the 335th squadron of the 116th combat wing, which is stationed at the Araxos air base in the northwest Peloponnese region. Officials stated that the aircraft was conducting a routine practice flight when the malfunction necessitated a diversion.

The pilot subsequently redirected the plane to Zakynthos airport, which is situated approximately 100 kilometers south of Araxos, across the Ionian Sea. Multiple reports from Greek broadcaster ERT and various local media outlets indicated that the plane appeared to have caught fire either before or during the landing sequence. However, the Greek Air Force issued a clarification, stating that the aircraft was not involved in any fire incident.

The incident highlights a deviation from standard operational procedure due to mechanical issues, resulting in the emergency landing. The official statements emphasize the successful handling of the emergency by the crew, while the conflicting reports regarding fire remain part of the public record surrounding the event. The focus of the official account remains on the successful, albeit unplanned, landing of the military asset.
