On Thursday, the president conducted meetings with various ministerial candidates slated for the new Mindaugas Paluckas government. Separately, in a legal development, the Lithuanian Political News of the Vilnius District Court overturned a prior exonerating verdict concerning former policeman Raimondas Ščerbininas. The court subsequently found the individual guilty of defacing state symbols. The court determined that the former officer was responsible for defacing the coat of arms of Lithuania, which was sewn onto a police uniform in December 2024, and subsequently uploading video documentation of the incident to the internet.
As a result of these findings, the court imposed a fine of 4,050 euros on R. Ščerbininas. The ruling specifically addressed the act of defacement of the state emblem and the subsequent online dissemination of the footage.
The court’s decision reinstated criminal accountability for the actions taken against the state’s symbols.
