ELTA: NATO air policing mission is being reclassified as air defense

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda announced the reclassification of NATO’s air policing mission to air defense during the NATO summit meeting in Ankara on Wednesday. According to the President, this change is intended to enhance the safety of the airspace above Lithuania and other Baltic nations. The announcement coincided with other political activities in Lithuania.

Separately, the Conservative faction of the Seimas met with the designated Minister of Health, Linus Kukuraitis, and Taurimas Valys, who is slated to take on the role of Finance Minister. Meanwhile, the General Prosecutor’s Office initiated legal action, appealing to the Supreme Court of Lithuania (LAT) regarding the acquittal of European Parliament member Petras Gražulis concerning allegations of insulting LGBTQ individuals. During the proceedings in Ankara, the decision to reclassify the NATO air policing mission as air defense was formalized.

President Nausėda confirmed that this strategic adjustment is crucial for maintaining security across the regional airspace. This shift in designation underscores a commitment to bolstering collective air defense capabilities within the alliance framework. The measure aims to provide a more robust and comprehensive defense posture for the skies over the Baltic region.
