At the NATO meeting held in Ankara, F. Merz issued a statement to parliament confirming an agreement with the United States administration to procure and deploy American Tomahawk missiles within Germany. According to Merz, this acquisition is intended to fill a significant strategic gap in Germany’s defense capabilities.
He added that concurrently, German efforts will focus on developing and deploying proprietary European defense systems. This announcement follows prior statements from Merz in May, when he noted that the planned Tomahawk missile deployment in Germany, which had been previously announced by former U.S. President Joe Biden, was undergoing revisions.
During the meeting, diplomatic discussions also covered various geopolitical matters. Reports indicated that Turkish President R. T.
Erdogan presented an item to NATO leaders, and it was noted that UK political figure K. Starmer reportedly left an item in Turkey due to adherence to strict UK regulations. In addition to the missile procurement, Merz addressed the issue of spent weapon reserves in Iran and Ukraine when speaking with the German Chancellor.
The German Chancellor offered a response to these discussions at that time. The overall proceedings highlighted Germany’s commitment to integrating advanced American weaponry, specifically the Tomahawk missiles, while simultaneously advancing independent European defense infrastructure for the nation.
