Lithuanian President G. Nausėda stated that Lithuania is currently assisting Latvia with its border security by deploying officers from the State Border Guard Service (VSAT) to deter illegal crossings. During a joint press conference, the President noted that while this cooperation is positive, its level of intensity would depend on Latvia’s stated requirements.
Nausėda stressed that reintroducing internal border controls within the Schengen area would signify a failure of current security measures. He addressed widespread public concern regarding increasing migration flows, asserting that establishing internal borders would constitute a “defeat and a kind of capitulation” to the issue of irregular migrant influx. According to the Lithuanian leader, strengthening the security of the EU’s external border is paramount.
He argued that the effectiveness of the entire European Union in safeguarding its external border is directly linked to how well its state security mechanisms are implemented. The discussion highlighted the ongoing tension between maintaining open movement within the Schengen zone and the need to manage external migration pressures.
