Dr. Mykolas Butvila, a sports medicine physician, and NBA player Kasparas Jakučionis recently discussed crucial aspects of preparing for physical exertion. They stressed that comprehensive evaluation is a vital component of preparation, particularly for young athletes whose bodies are still undergoing development.
Butvila explained that athletes may not perceive imbalances, such as one side of the body functioning weaker or executing movements incorrectly, but objective testing methods can detect these changes much earlier. This emphasis on proactive assessment was highlighted during the “Make A Play” basketball camp held in Vilnius from July 26 to August 1, which targeted players aged 10 to 15. The kinesiotherapy team from “Hila,” a partner in the program, actively participated throughout the event.
Their assessment covered the players’ self-perception, overall physical fitness levels, and provided consultations regarding managing intense physical load. The discussions underscored the importance of understanding how the body responds to rigorous training. Experts advised that proper screening can help athletes learn how to train safely, allowing them to better understand what to avoid when increasing intensity.
By incorporating detailed physical examinations into their routine, young sports participants can mitigate the risk of overuse injuries and ensure balanced development. This approach moves beyond simple physical performance checks, focusing instead on long-term musculoskeletal health and injury prevention strategies.
