In the agricultural building, the spouses stored not tools, but Belarusian cigarettes under the floor

On Thursday, officers from the VSAT Varėna Border Patrol Unit conducted an operation in Rudamina village, located in the Lazdijai district. During the investigation, the unit apprehended a 49-year-old and a 53-year-old couple. A search conducted within the couple’s residence led border guards to the discovery of a concealed hideout located beneath the roof of an agricultural building.

Upon entering the area, the VSAT officers successfully extracted multiple bundles of contraband cigarettes. In total, authorities seized 13,750 packs of various types of cigarettes, some marked and some unmarked, from the property. The combined value of the contraband, inclusive of all required taxes payable in Lithuania, was determined to be 75,763 euros.

Following the seizure, the residents were taken into custody and transported to the local detention center. The VSAT Varėna Border Patrol Unit initiated proceedings against the individuals for the illicit disposal of excise-taxable goods. The operation highlights the unit’s ongoing efforts to monitor and interdict illegal trade within the region.
