During a meeting of the Democratic Union “For the sake of Lithuania” faction on Thursday, Deputy Director of Inspection Danguolė Morkūnienė provided details regarding a significant data breach concerning real estate information. Morkūnienė stated that while the total count of compromised records is substantial, the actual number of unique individuals impacted is slightly lower, as multiple records may pertain to a single person. She confirmed that, as of the date of the meeting, more than 500,000 individuals were considered affected by the incident.
The leak is suspected to involve more than 600,000 real estate register records that were compromised during the period beginning in January. Authorities estimated that the resulting damage from this data theft amounted to no less than 111,000 euros. Addressing procedural questions, Morkūnienė elaborated on the timeline and the process by which the data theft was reported.
She clarified that the Inspectorate had not received any directive from the General Prosecutor’s Office advising them to withhold reporting on the incident, even given the presence of an ongoing pre-trial investigation. This statement aimed to clarify the investigative timeline and the extent of the data loss impacting the public and the registry system.
