The current yield outlook for local berry crops is significantly diminished, according to agricultural experts in the region. Alė Kučinskienė, who owns one of the largest berry farms located in the Rokiškis district, addressed the current state of the harvest. She stated that the projected output for this season will be substantially lower than previous years.
Kučinskienė provided concrete figures illustrating the decline. She noted that in previous years, the farm was capable of harvesting up to four tons of berries from a single field. However, this year, the anticipated harvest from that same acreage is estimated to be no more than 100 kilograms.
While the berry bushes remain standing in the fields, partially covered by snow, the primary issue lies with the fruit development. Kučinskienė explained that although the foliage structure is intact, the berries are absent because the buds that formed earlier in the spring experienced freezing damage. This environmental factor has directly impacted the potential yield of the crop.
The situation highlights the vulnerability of local agriculture to extreme weather patterns. Despite the physical presence of the bushes, the failure of the early spring buds to mature properly means that the expected bounty of berries has been curtailed. Local growers are now assessing the necessary measures to support the next growing cycle, given the reduced productivity of this year’s berry harvest.
