J. Olekas about relationship with Belarus: we will have to find some kind of relationship of coexistence with such a regime as it is now

During an appearance on “Radio Z” on Lithuanian television on Wednesday, J. Olekas addressed the multifaceted political situation in Belarus, emphasizing that the complexity of the country precludes simple binary assessments. He stated that the approach to the nation must be nuanced, suggesting that support cannot be exclusively directed toward certain groups while neglecting others.

Olekas noted that while the current governing structure in Belarus operates under an authoritarian regime, the country itself possesses significant internal diversity. He stressed the need for an understanding that acknowledges both the ruling apparatus and the persistent existence of democratic elements. According to the politician, navigating the present requires finding a sustainable way to coexist with the existing regime while simultaneously planning for the future trajectory of the nation.

He argued that for any long-term strategy to succeed, the democratic forces within Belarus must remain connected to the international community. Therefore, he underscored the necessity of maintaining a constructive relationship with these opposition groups. He concluded by advising that Lithuania’s strategic focus should center on bolstering and supporting these democratic institutions within Belarus, thereby fostering a pathway for eventual political transition.
