Lithuanian text: Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania condemns the decision to return Russians to the Olympic family

Education, Science and Sports Minister Raminta Popa stated that the current geopolitical climate necessitates maintaining existing guidelines. She emphasized that, given the ongoing conflict involving daily brutal attacks against Ukraine, the situation has not changed, leading to the conclusion that there is no basis to cancel or soften the recommendations previously issued by the IOC. Minister Popa noted that the provisions outlined in the new government program concerning relations with aggressor nations remain strictly condemning.

Consequently, the political stance will not be altered to accommodate the compromises proposed by international sports organizations. Popa highlighted the regional impact of the conflict, stating that because the war is occurring in Europe, it directly affects all nations on the continent in the realm of sports. She cautioned that individual national decisions regarding international participation could have significant repercussions.

Therefore, the ministry intends to raise this issue at the level of the European Union. The Minister concluded that any potential deviation from current policy, particularly in light of the daily human cost of the war, is unwarranted. The final decision, she asserted, must remain firm and consistent with international condemnation of the conflict.
