M. Sinkevičius on about the agreement of parties on demography: “There is no draft document”

M. Sinkevičius, the leader of the Social Democrats, addressed journalists on Tuesday regarding efforts to improve the nation’s demographic situation. He clarified that while significant discussion has taken place, no formal draft document currently exists.

He noted that the initiative remains largely at the level of political discussion rather than a finalized political agreement. However, Sinkevičius highlighted the scale of the existing input, stating that the Ministry of Social Security and Labor has received about 105 distinct proposals aimed at improving demographics. Due to the sheer breadth of these suggestions, the Ministry cannot feasibly implement every single one.

Consequently, the focus must narrow to prioritizing five key proposals, a process that necessitates achieving broad political consensus. The leader stressed that this consensus must originate from the ruling political coalition. He emphasized that the agreement should not be the result of selective choices made by individuals, but rather a commitment endorsed by the ruling parties as a unified approach.

According to Sinkevičius, securing this general political consensus is crucial because it is expected to ensure policy continuity, regardless of any future changes within the government structure. The consensus is viewed as the necessary foundation for advancing substantive policy change.
