Matulionis on the threat of Russian provocations: in an emergency, NATO would deploy more forces in Lithuania

Matulionis emphasized that the Alliance views warnings concerning an increased potential threat from Russian provocations over the coming months with significant seriousness. This concern extends geographically, encompassing not only the Baltic region but also other nations across Europe. Speaking to Žinių Radijas, the presidential adviser stated that the warning signals are being taken seriously by the Alliance.

Matulionis indicated that should indicators confirm a critical situation, he does not doubt that the deployment of additional military forces and enhanced air defense capabilities would follow. The presidential adviser further detailed that the potential provocations from Russia could manifest in several distinct forms. These alleged actions range from sophisticated “false flag” operations, designed to falsely implicate Ukraine, to acts of direct sabotage against infrastructure.

According to matulionis, the risk is not confined to specific areas, suggesting that no nation is immune to such geopolitical dangers. He added that countries providing active support to Ukraine may, in fact, face an elevated level of risk from these escalating tensions. The statements underscore a heightened state of vigilance regarding potential destabilizing actions originating from the region.
