To maintain comprehensive national security, the Lithuanian defense strategy emphasizes the critical need for well-trained military personnel supported by adequate supplies. This necessitates the active procurement of advanced weapon systems alongside the corresponding reserves of ammunition. These required supplies range from air defense missiles and anti-tank munitions to basic operational ammunition.
The commitment to bolstering these stockpiles is reflected in budgetary allocations. For the year 2026 alone, the funds designated for these supplies are set to double compared to 2025, reaching 400 million euros. Defense Minister Robertas Kaunas stated that maintaining robust ammunition stocks is fundamental to achieving credible deterrence.
Looking forward, the defense plans outline specific budgetary commitments. In the short term, through 2030, a minimum of 10% of the total defense budget is earmarked for ammunition purchases, which translates to an average annual expenditure nearing 700 million euros. Furthermore, the strategy mandates a sustained increase in resource allocation starting in 2031.
From that point onward, at least 15% of the entire defense budget will be dedicated to ensuring adequate munitions reserves. These planned investments in ammunition are designed to support sustained military readiness across the coming decade.
