During the test, the presence of an accompanying fighter jet produced a powerful supersonic explosion that obscured the specific noise generated by the X-59 itself. The first recorded supersonic flight occurred in 1947 when US Air Force test pilot Charles “Chuck” Yeager flew the Bell X-1 aircraft.
