Naturalists are worried: will the Dzikija partridge be forgotten as the government changes?

Conservation efforts have been ongoing for several months, involving extensive discussions with the management of the Ministry of the Environment and various related institutions. These discussions have centered on the critical necessity of strictly protecting specific Dzūkian and Labanor forests, which are vital habitats for impressive bird populations and potentially crucial for many other protected species. Significant preparatory work, including detailed analysis and ecological modeling, has been completed.

Furthermore, negotiations were held with the State Forestry Agency concerning an agreement to prohibit logging in these sensitive territories for economic purposes. However, the current leadership transition within the Ministry of the Environment has reportedly led to a withdrawal from these previously discussed agreements. This shift has prompted concern among conservationists.

Liutauras Raudonikis, head of the Lithuanian Ornithological Society, stated that this change is worrisome, noting the agency’s current reluctance to finalize the agreed-upon protections. The Society emphasized that any compensatory measures adopted by the Seimas must constitute specific, concrete actions aimed at safeguarding these forests, rather than merely financial payments. The focus remains on maintaining the established protective status for these unique natural areas and ensuring the long-term security of the associated biodiversity.
