New offer: work in Lithuania for a couple of years – and go home at least for a while

A proposed regulatory model for temporary work permits has been outlined for foreign nationals entering Lithuania for specific labor needs. This system is designed for individuals who do not plan to reside in the country permanently or for an extended duration, focusing instead on short-term employment in sectors such as long-haul trucking and construction. The core proposal suggests legislative amendments aimed at streamlining the entry and application process for these foreign workers.

By expediting the necessary procedures, businesses operating within Lithuania could more rapidly secure the necessary foreign workforce, particularly in regions experiencing shortages of local labor. However, this streamlined access is contingent upon a new, strict condition. The temporary nature of the arrangement is emphasized by the rule stating that upon the conclusion of the fixed-term employment period, the foreign national must depart Lithuania.

This structure limits the duration of stay and employment. The primary function of this updated work permit is therefore to address immediate labor demands without creating pathways for long-term residency. The maximum authorized period for this temporary work authorization is set at two years.

This framework allows Lithuania to manage seasonal or project-based labor requirements efficiently while maintaining clear stipulations regarding the worker’s departure after the initial fixed number of years.
