Satellite imagery obtained by AFP indicates that in May, areas experienced the clearing of a few blocks of forest and the construction of a bridge across a canal connecting the Nartos lagoon to the sea. Olsi Nika, a marine biologist with the non-governmental organization EcoAlbania, stated that bulldozers operating on the beaches had already destroyed nesting sites for endangered sea turtles. Furthermore, the construction activities caused damage to the nests of numerous bird species due to the creation of access roads through the dunes and the felling of trees.
The establishment of the canal between the lagoon and the sea has significantly disrupted the water flow necessary for the preservation of local marshes and swamps. These developments have fueled a wave of protests across Albania concerning an allegedly illegal luxury resort development. According to Nika, the scale of the activity represents a substantial threat to biological diversity.
The reports highlight multiple instances of environmental degradation linked to recent construction projects in the region. The combination of habitat destruction, alteration of natural waterways, and the impact on sensitive wildlife populations has become a focal point for local advocacy groups.
