On the issue of nuclear weapons, in the Parliament – sharp statements. After submission, the Constitution’s provision was approved

During a recent legislative session, the voting record reflected a division among members of the parliament, with 89 MPs voting in favor of an amendment, 11 MPs voting against, and 6 MPs choosing to abstain. Addressing the subject matter, Juozas Olekas, President of the Seimas, stressed the critical role of NATO’s nuclear deterrence capabilities within the Alliance’s defense structure. He asserted that this system is fundamental to mitigating the risk of large-scale aggression directed at the Alliance.

Olekas stated that this established deterrence system, which functions as part of collective defense, has proven effective over many decades, making it one of the most crucial factors in reducing the threat of major conflict against member nations. However, the expert expressed concern regarding the potential for the region to remain in a “NATO gray zone,” suggesting that current efforts are insufficient or delayed. He further noted that the inclusion of the NATO nuclear shield is integral to the Alliance’s deterrence framework.

This includes the constitutional-level prohibition safeguarding the territory of the Republic of Lithuania from the presence of nuclear weapons in the event of an aggression threat. Despite the clear defensive mechanisms in place, Olekas voiced apprehension about the current geopolitical trajectory, advising that action is necessary to prevent the situation from stagnating within an ambiguous zone.
