An art installation has been unveiled, commemorating Lithuania’s journey towards sovereignty. The exhibit serves to mark the initial efforts to break from occupation, the subsequent restoration of national independence, and extends a message of solidarity to Ukraine in its ongoing conflict. Visitors are also invited to participate by writing down their personal definitions of freedom.
The installation will remain open until Monday at 11 pm. Opening the exhibit, the Minister of Defense, Robertas Kaunas, highlighted the historical milestone of the departure of the final Russian occupation forces. He noted that while Lithuania declared its independence on March 11, 1990, the country experienced a prolonged period before achieving full autonomy.
Kaunas stated that true freedom was realized only after the last occupying forces left the nation on August 31, 1993. Speaking on the concept, the minister defined freedom as “the ability to choose, to create, [and] to decide.” The installation thus encapsulates a historical timeline, tracing the nation’s path from declaration to the tangible reality of self-determination. The exhibit functions as a physical representation of this sustained movement toward self-governance, connecting past struggles with contemporary support for Ukraine’s fight for its own freedom.
