On Wednesday morning, officers from the VSAT Varėna Border Guard detachment detected signs suggesting the excavation of a subsurface tunnel originating from the Belarusian side near the village of Pieščių in the Vernė district of Lithuania. To investigate the potential breach, specialists from the Polish State Border Guard Service Palenkė section arrived, bringing specialized equipment designed for tunnel detection. The investigation involved patrolling the area and drilling exploratory holes in the ground.
These efforts confirmed the presence of an artificial subsurface channel emanating from the Belarusian side. Utilizing an excavator, authorities carried out excavation work, successfully locating a tunnel approximately 1.5 meters deep with a diameter of about 1 meter. The detected tunnel traversed a distance of roughly 5 meters from the established border line into Lithuanian territory.
The entrance point on the Lithuanian side was situated approximately 10 meters from the actual border demarcation. The deployment of these specialized teams allowed for the confirmation of the illicit tunnel activity near the border. Authorities are continuing to monitor the area following the discovery of this unauthorized crossing point.
