Puzzle for the courts: an attorney’s assistant was sentenced in one case, in another he was recognized as a victim

The Supreme Court of Lithuania (LAT) recently examined the corruption conviction of H. Ratauto. During the proceedings, his legal representative, Gintaras Dabkevičius, introduced an indictment originating from a separate legal matter, urging the judges to consider this document within the broader context of the current case.

According to Dabkevičius, the indictment pertains to a case that was transferred to the Kaunas district court, where an individual identified as Tomas G. faced charges related to self-government. In that distinct legal proceeding, H.

Ratauto was documented as a victim. The lawyer further noted that Tomas G. currently serves as a witness in the very case before the LAT, which concerns allegations of influence trading.

Dabkevičius addressed the potential disparity in judicial rulings, characterizing such variations as standard legal practice. He specifically highlighted that the “MG Baltic” case is anticipated to hold significant relevance for the Kaunas district court regarding the matter transferred to it. The introduction of this material suggests an effort by the defense to establish contextual links between disparate legal proceedings.

By presenting evidence from another court action, the defense aims to provide the LAT judges with a comprehensive view of the individuals involved and the scope of related allegations across multiple legal fronts.

  1. The dual status of the assistant—defendant in one case and victim in another—creates a very complex legal scenario.
