R. Kaunas: this year about 800 million euros are to be added to air defense

Minister of National Defense Robertas Kaunas announced plans to allocate an additional 800 million euros to bolster the nation’s air defense capabilities this year. Speaking to journalists in parliament on Thursday, Kaunas specified that this supplementary funding is exclusively designated for advancing the air defense infrastructure. He emphasized that all associated procurements and ongoing projects are structured to meet critical national priorities, specifically naming air defense and the defense division.

This financial commitment follows a directive issued by the State Defense Council (SDC) last November. The SDC mandated that Lithuania establish a comprehensive, integrated air defense system within a three-year timeframe. This ambitious undertaking requires the coordinated involvement of several state bodies, including the national army, the State Border Guard Service (SBGS), and the Public Security Service (PSS).

Robertas Kaunas confirmed that the strategic investment aims to create a unified and robust layered defense network. The resources provided are intended to modernize existing capabilities and integrate disparate security elements into a cohesive whole. The minister stressed that the planning ensures that the increased defense spending directly supports the overarching goal of securing the nation’s airspace and territorial integrity through enhanced air assets.

This strategic funding underscores the commitment to maintaining a high level of national security readiness.
