Modern artificial intelligence systems, which power tools ranging from voice assistants and automatic subtitling services to sophisticated chatbots, are fundamentally dependent on vast quantities of high-quality speech data. While major global languages benefit from extensive, readily available corpora of spoken word, the volume of publicly accessible speech resources for the Lithuanian language has historically lagged. This data gap presents a significant technical hurdle for the advancement of natural language processing in the region.

According to Gražina Korvel, head of LIEPA-3 and a professor at the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics of the University of Vilnius, the performance of AI tools in Lithuanian often falls short of expectations. She attributes this limitation to a core deficiency: the artificial intelligence models lack sufficient examples of authentic, everyday Lithuanian speech from which they can accurately learn. The efficacy of modern AI is directly proportional to the quality and quantity of the data it processes.

For the Lithuanian language, the scarcity of diverse, real-world speech samples means that AI systems struggle to interpret nuanced, colloquial, or rapidly spoken speech patterns accurately. Improving this foundational data pool is therefore critical for enhancing technological integration across various sectors. Researchers emphasize that developing robust computational models for the Lithuanian language requires a concerted effort to digitize and annotate large datasets.

By increasing the availability of high-quality speech recordings, the academic and technological communities aim to bridge this gap, ensuring that the capabilities of artificial intelligence can meet the linguistic complexity and daily usage patterns of the Lithuanian language.
