Scandal in the Lithuanian Army: revealed a scheme – from the recruit’s service “they were sucked out” for 600 euros(1)

A pre-trial investigation has been initiated concerning allegations of potentially corruptive actions aimed at circumventing compulsory basic military service within the Šiauliai region. The scope of this inquiry covers several municipalities, including Šiauliai city and district, Kelmė, Radviliškis, Akmenė, Telšiai, Mažeikiai, Joniškis, and Pakruojis district. According to reports from the prosecutor’s office, the investigation began earlier this year when personnel at the Lithuanian Army’s Šiauliai regional military commissioner’s Military Service and Completion Center observed suspicious activities.

These actions suggested attempts to avoid mandatory military service. Consequently, suspicion has been directed toward two active-duty soldiers and five civilians. The investigation is being overseen by the Šiauliai regional prosecutor’s office and is actively conducted by the Lithuanian Army’s Military Police.

The focus remains on determining the extent and nature of the alleged misconduct surrounding the fulfillment of military obligations. Separately, related legislative activity indicates that the Seimas has supported the establishment of a compensation system designed to address damages incurred through the lawful use of military force. These proceedings highlight ongoing oversight within the Lithuanian defense sector, ensuring adherence to regulations governing military service and the operations of the armed forces.

The ongoing investigation into the alleged evasion of service underscores the commitment of the Lithuanian authorities to maintaining integrity within the national army structure.
