Summer dangers: doctor warns about the risks that are most often underestimated

As temperatures rise, the popularity of recreational water activities increases, leading many holidaymakers to visit various bodies of water for cooling refreshment. While official swimming pools undergo consistent quality monitoring, swimming in less controlled environments, such as ponds or small lakes, presents different health considerations, particularly in densely populated summer areas. Renata Aleknienė, a health insurance expert with the Lithuanian branch of Compensa Life Vienna Insurance Group SE, notes that the primary risk of contracting various microorganisms is often found in smaller, standing water bodies.

These include ponds and small lakes, especially those frequented by large numbers of people during the summer months. The water can harbor bacteria, protozoa, or, less commonly, viruses, which can lead to various health issues, including gastrointestinal infections. Given the increased exposure risk, consulting a doctor regarding proper water safety precautions is advisable.

Meteorologists are forecasting continued temperature increases, which will likely sustain this trend of outdoor water recreation. Therefore, while the appeal of natural water sources remains high during the summer, awareness of potential pathogens and adherence to recommended safety guidelines are crucial for preventing illness.
