On Sunday afternoon, border security personnel from VSAT Varėna detected an unidentified object flying from the state border into Lithuania’s interior, near Daugydonių village in the Šalčininkai district. Utilizing a video surveillance system, the border guards tracked the object. Upon detection, the guards immediately deployed drone containment equipment, which successfully lost visual contact with the flying item.
The border guards subsequently cordoned off the suspected area and initiated a search for the downed drone. The search efforts led the team to locate the unmanned aerial vehicle in the fields of Dimitrov village. Attached to the drone was a parcel encased in transparent polyethylene film.
The drone carrying the cargo was transported to the Purvėnų border checkpoint for inspection. Upon examination, authorities discovered 200 packs of “NZ Gold” cigarettes bearing Belarusian banderoles. The total assessed value of the contraband, inclusive of all mandatory Lithuanian taxes, was determined to be 1,102 euros.
The incident highlights the ongoing monitoring efforts by border security forces to intercept unauthorized cross-border activities using advanced surveillance technology.
