A recent investigation uncovered a significant illicit shipment of cigarettes originating in the Republic of Latvia. According to reports, an individual identified as E. M.
orchestrated the transport, instructing accomplices to move the goods via a truck while he maintained surveillance from a separate vehicle. The operation involved D. T., who subsequently took possession of the semi-trailer at a prearranged location within Latvia.
The seized cargo consisted of 300,000 units of cigarettes bearing Belarusian banderoles, alongside an additional 180,000 units of plain cigarettes. The combined estimated value of the contraband exceeded 2 million euros. The movement of the truck carrying this substantial load was intercepted by officers from the Border Guard Service operating in the Pagėgiai border district of Lithuania.
Following the seizure, both E. M. and D.
T. were formally charged with the crime of unlawful disposal of excise goods. Authorities noted that the charges carry potential penalties, including substantial fines or imprisonment for a period of up to eight years.
The incident highlights ongoing efforts by border agencies to interdict large-scale smuggling operations involving tobacco products across international borders.
